In the summer of 2004, Ben Wechsler ('67) and Dick Tito ('69) came up with the seemingly hopeless task of organizing a reunion for the Nu Chapter classes of '64-'74. Tireless searching (simple calls to Union and Beta) by Ben and Dick produced a list of most brothers, and letters and emails were sent far and wide (Dick's secretary did all the hard work!). Knowing that it could not have been the draw of Ben and Dick, it had to be fond memories of drunken weekends that inspired 60 out of 113 brothers to agree to meet in Saratoga Springs in the fall of 2005. Friday night we had a dinner and evening at Saratoga Springs Raceway and everyone got a chance to get reacquainted after more than 40 years in some cases. Sally Webster in the Union College Alumni Office continued to lend a hand and put on a nice reception for the brothers before and during the Dutchmen's football game. In spite of a cold rain, the Dutchmen continued their winning streak, and everyone had a great time. Saturday evening we had a great dinner party at the hotel in Saratoga Springs. Dancing, singing some Beta songs, just plain talking. We are expanding the group to include all Union Betas that we can locate for all years.
There are some pictures in the Photo Gallery. Names have been withheld to protect everyone's innocence and deniability. Use the link at the bottom of the History page to get to a list of all initiates since the chapter was founded.
It was great! It was so great, in fact, that we are held a second Union Reunion in Atlantic City in May, 2008. We did not have the large turnout we had in 2005, so despite a majority of comments that being near Schenectady was not important, it is likely that future, major reunions will be held in or around Union. We did have another full reunion in 2012 in Saratoga Springs. Large events in facilities that can handle potentially hundreds of attendees, however, do require large, personal, financial guarantees to the facilites, and are, therefore, very difficult to plan. Starting in 2013, we have been holding mini-reunions in Kennebunkport, Maine in the fall. We started with the classes from '63 to '70, and then added the class of '62, and in 2017 we are adding the classes of '71 and '72. These have been smaller, obviously, but they are manageable in terms of financial requirements. The 2023 Mini-reunion will be the tenth, and we have a Friday evening dinner at a restaurant that offers a chance to get some lobster or other local seafood for those that want to, and Saturday we have a cocktail party at Ben & Susan Wechsler's vacation home on the ocean, followed by another dinner. We might have a lunch on Saturday, weather permitting, at the Two Lights Lobster Shack, which overlooks the "corner" of the Atlantic Ocean and Casco Bay, where Portland, Freeport and other popular towns are located. Some of the brothers get together for breakfast on Sunday. These Mini-reunions have worked out well, and any brothers from Nu Chapter are invited.
